Closer to Terezín: a game into the streets of Terezín following the traces of stories

Play a game directly in the streets of the former ghetto and experience the realities of World War II and the ghetto. You can play as an individual, with a whole team, or as a school class.

This game is currently available only in Czech language. We are preparing an English version.

What can you look forward to?

Embark on a journey following the footsteps of the boys and girls whose fate mostly ended in the Nazi killing machinery. Will you be able to save the person you represent? Can you make use of the situations in the “city of paradoxes,” the Terezín ghetto?!

Boys and girls from the Terezín legacy

Who is the game intended for?

The game is intended for all interested individuals aged 10 and above (younger participants are recommended to play accompanied by older individuals, not only due to the need to navigate the city using a map but also because of the longer texts involved in the game). It is suitable for those who enjoy discovering new things, are not afraid to move around, and like to think. It is also suitable for adult participants.

What will you experience during the game?

During the game, you will explore certain locations of the former Terezín ghetto through the story of three boys and two girls. The game offers a full-day itinerary (including tasks along the way and topics for a final discussion), but it can also be customized to use only a part of it. It is ideal for group outings or school field trips (although not suitable for all groups).

1. Download and print the game

You can choose from 5 versions of the game, each with different content and story elements. If you’re playing alone or in a small group, it is recommended to select one game with a female guide and one with a male guide. If you’re in a larger group (such as a class or a scout troop), divide yourselves into five groups, with each group assigned one story. The five game versions are designed in a way that minimizes encounters between children from different groups.

Choose the game version:

If you want to learn something along the way (to entertain the children in your care), you can use a worksheet dedicated to life in the 1930s and 1940s and basic knowledge about World War II. ‘

2. Plan a trip to Terezín

The best way is to take a train from Prague towards Ústí nad Labem to the Bohušovice nad Ohří station. From there, you can either follow the river or head directly left from the station building along the road until you reach Terezín (approximately half an hour). This way, you will walk in the footsteps of the first transports that arrived on foot from the train in Bohušovice. Another option is to take a bus from Prague Holešovice directly to Terezín Square. It is more convenient, but you will miss the experience of arriving in the town following the footsteps of the heroes of our stories.

3. Set off on the journey and play

One game version lasts approximately 90 minutes (depending on the players’ navigational skills, age, and motivation). If you have the whole day for the trip, you can also print out an extended version of the game, which builds upon the basic story and takes you to additional interesting locations.

You can also visit a variety of interesting exhibitions right in the town. However, do not underestimate the planning of your return trip. Trains from Bohušovice run regularly, but there are few buses from the square, especially on weekends.
